What is Lucid Dreaming?
Lucid dreaming is the ability to realize you are dreaming and then change the course of the dream. Lucid dreaming sometimes happens accidentally without the dreamers intention, but other times you need to do certain things and try certain technique to induce lucid dreaming. Lucid dreaming happens in REM sleep when your mind is entering the dream state. Lucid dreaming divided into three categories, WILD, DILD, and MILD. So here are the main three ways you can have a lucid dream.
MILD - Mnemonic Induction of Lucid Dreaming
By using the MILD technique for lucid dreaming, you will work with mantras or affirmations to make your subconscious mind aware of what your goal is. The mantra could be something like "I want to have a lucid dream", "I want to become aware that I am dreaming" or "I want to take control of my dream". Then like any other type of affirmation, you will repeat the phrase over an over again before you go to sleep, so that this is the last thing your mind is focusing on before falling asleep. You often times dream about the things you have been thinking about just before you feel asleep, which means, your chances of experiencing a lucid dream using this technique will increase once your subconscious mind remembers the phrase and incorporate it into the dream.
WILD - Wake Induced Lucid Dreaming
WILD allows you to go from a waken state directly into lucid dreaming. The easiest way to experience this is by first going to sleep as usual. Then set your alarm clock for about 5-6 hour into sleep, which is when your longest period of REM sleep accrues. Stay awake for 30 minutes to allow your mind to become conscious, which is the main point of lucid dream. After 30 minutes, you are ready to go to sleep again. You can repeat to yourself "I want to stay conscious" to allow your body to fall asleep before your mind. This will cause sleep paralysis, which is the state where your body is sleeping your mind is awake, which happens during REM sleep to protect the body as we would otherwise act out our dreams and be a danger to ourselves. But stay calm even though you will not be able to move a muscle in your body. Allow yourself to enter your dream.
DILD - Dream Initiated Lucid Dreaming
DILD is lucid dreaming that happening directly in your dream. To have a DILD lucid dream, you need to do different reality check when you are awake, as you will then slowly make it a habit and thereby continue these reality check when you are asleep as well. These reality check are most typically things like looking at the clock. In dreams, it is almost impossible to determine the time, as the time keeps changing or the appearance of the clock changes. You can also count your fingers, as that is also something that is difficult to do in dreams. Do this during your day like every hour, or every time you do something such as drinking or entering a room, and so on. Make it a habit to inspect the clock or your fingers, and then when you are sleeping, you will automatically continue this behavior and then realize that you are dreaming when you suddenly have 15 mutated fingers or the time keeps changing.
