If these are some of the questions you get from your family, friends or simply yourself, then this article is for you. If you are having a Quarter Life Crisis, then you are probably in your early twenties to early thirties, realizing that time is ticking and you can no longer use the excuse "Well, I am still young" when people ask you what you are going to do with your life. This makes you feel anxious, as you see the people around you getting the right kinds of careers, finding jobs that they love, getting married and even having kids, when you are still trying to figure out what your passion is. Everyone seems to have their lives all figured out, with a clear plan for the future, where you feel lost and confused. When you were a teenager, it was okay for you to say you didn't know where you were going in life, as you were still so young, and had many years to figure out where life would take you. But now you feel like you are not where you should be in life, and have no clear vision of the future.
Well, let me just say, You Are Not Alone!
More people than you think, including myself, are in the exact same place as you, experiencing a quarter life crisis, trying to find some clarity and trying to get on the same level as everyone around them. But you are not like everyone else... you are YOU, and what works for others may not necessarily work for you.
What do you like to do?
This may sound simple, but it can be quite difficult to answer, as we may not really know what we like to do, or maybe we have convinced ourselves that we like to do something, which we really don't, but it just sounds good. So take an honest look inside and ask yourself... what do I like to do? Now write down all the things that comes to mind no matter what it is. Your list could look something like this,
- I like to write songs
- I like to travel
- I like to take pictures
- I like to try new things
- I like to be free
- I like to read
- I like to try new food
- I like to decorate my home
- I like to climb
- I like to meet new people
- I like to paint
- I like to write
- I like to learn new languages
- I like to swim
- I like to do Yoga
- I like to play video games
- I like to dance
So there may be many things you would like to do if you got payed for it, but there will almost always be certain things you want to be doing, even if you did not get any money from it, if you had the time and freedom to do it. So as you look at your list, you may say, I really love to travel and experiencing new adventures. Then look at your list and try to combine some of the things on it, so that it revolves around traveling. So for this example, I might combine travel with the following: taking pictures, trying new food, climbing, meeting new people, learning new languages and swim. These are all things I can do when traveling, and that will enrich my experience further. Once you have combined your likes, you may proceed.
Now to the tough question... how can you actually earn money from your passion, as we all need money to live. Take a new piece of paper and brainstorm all the ideas on how to make money from following this passion. Your list may look something like this,
- Become a travel blogger
- Become a YouTuber making videos on travel
- Find temporary work in different countries
- Write a book about traveling
- Do global seminars, talking about traveling, climbing or swimming
- Become a tour guide
- Start a photography website or blog
- Review and promote climbing equipment
The last question is how are you going to make this happen. Now it is time to get specific, and for that you need to do A LOT of research. Find people who are doing what you would like to do, and then learn from them. How did they get started, what did they do, and how can you do the same thing. If someone is already doing it, you know that it is possible for you to do the same. Then make a clear plan with all the action-steps you need to take to make this dream a reality. So after researching what you will need and how other people have succeeded, write down a step-by-step guide for you to follow. This may look something like:
Work full-time to save up $20.000
Find cheap hotels or make arrangement with people I know
Choose a way to make money when I travel and then research how to do that
Start working on what I have decided (start blogging, writing, YouTubing, create my website, etc.)
Research what I need when going to the chosen country
Buy my first ticket
Evaluate my trip and whether or not this is what I want to do
Love and Light!
